International Architecture Award Strengthens Building Culture
The Erich Mendelsohn Award for Brick Architecture is entering the next round.
A success story continues: The prestigious award for brick architecture is entering its seventh round. Once again, the focus is on outstanding projects that harness the architectural potential of the traditional building material brick in a forward-looking way. Most recently, the competition—awarded every three years—received more than 600 submissions from 30 countries.
The submission period for the Erich Mendelsohn Award 2026 for Brick Architecture runs from January 5 to April 30, 2026. Entries can be submitted online via the architecture award’s website. The submission fee is €349, while emerging architects and students are, as usual, exempt from the fee. The Newcomer Award, presented as a separate prize for young architects, will this year be held in collaboration with the architecture magazine DETAIL.
The Erich Mendelsohn Award 2026 will be presented in the following categories:
• Residential Building / Apartment Complex
• Public Buildings, Recreation and Sport
• Office and Commercial Buildings
• Detached House / Semi-detached House
Additional awards will also be presented for:
• Renovation/Recycling/Energy Efficiency/Sustainability
• Best in Germany
For the first time, groundbreaking projects that address Germany’s stringent legal requirements for ecological sustainability will be recognized with the Best in Germany award at the Erich Mendelsohn Award 2026 for Brick Architecture. All buildings constructed in Germany are eligible for the “Best in Germany” award, regardless of the location of the architectural firm.
Brick projects completed on or after January 1, 2021, are eligible for submission. Projects previously submitted for the 2023 edition of the award may be entered again, provided they were completed after January 1, 2021, and were not previously nominated. The composition of the jury will be announced shortly. The ceremonial award presentation is scheduled for autumn 2026 in Berlin.
