They have been chosen: On September 8, 2023, the Initiative Bauen mit Backstein announced this year's winners of the Erich Mendelsohn Award for Brick Architecture at the official award ceremony in Berlin. The jury particularly focused on two priorities in its evaluation: social housing and redevelopment. The Clos Pachem Winery by the Catalan office HARQUITECTES convinced the panel with its pioneering approach of interweaving aesthetic and technical elements, and was accordingly honored with the most important award, the Grand Prix.

Berlin The jury of the Erich Mendelsohn Award 2023 for Brick Architecture has decided: 76 architecture offices and projects from a total of 584 submissions were shortlisted by the jurors.

Erich Mendelsohn Award 2023 for Brick Architecture is announced
Berlin A success story continues: Dedicated for the first time to the visionary architect Erich Mendelsohn, the renowned Award for Brick Architecture enters its sixth round. Once again, the focus is on outstanding projects that use the architectural potential of the traditional building material brick in a sustainable way. In 2020, the fifth round of the competition attracted more than 600 entries from 30 countries. Entries for the award, that is offered and organized every three years by the Initiative Bauen mit Backstein (Brick Building Initiative) and is endowed with a total of 10.000 Euros, can be submitted from January 9th to April 30th 2023.

Berlin Erich Mendelsohn was one of the most important representatives of modernism in Germany and is still considered one of the world's most innovative architects of his time. The Initiative Bauen mit Backstein (Brick Building Initiative) is taking a special step to honor Mendelsohn as a pioneer of modern architecture: Its international architecture prize, which is awarded every three years, will in future bear the name Erich Mendelsohn Award for Brick Architecture.

Renowned Architecture prize proceeds with new name
Berlin At its annual general meeting, the Initiative Bauen mit Backstein (The Brick Building Initiative) decided to conduct future iterations of its award for outstanding architecture under a new name. The decision was made based on a new study commissioned to the Hamburg historian Prof. Thomas Großbölting on Fritz Höger’s Nazi past.

The Award for Brick Architecture aims to strengthen the public awareness of the design possibilities with the building material brick. Therefore the process and progress of each competition is accompanied by press releases. The submissions get then published by us and the selected media partner. Even objects that are not ultimately nominated for the Award for Brick Architecture reach a broad public audience. Fritz Höger Award 2020 for Brick Architecture
the best brick-projects 2020!
On 18th January 2021 the Building with Bricks Initiative announced the winners of the Fritz Höger Award for Brick Architecture via its website. This year not only bronze awards were a novelty: For the first time two projects were awarded the Grand Prix. Both the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne by Barozzi / Veiga and the Nakasone House detached property in Mexico City by the architect Escobedo Soliz completely convinced the judges and were accordingly honoured with the highest award.

Fritz Höger Award 2020 for Brick Architecture
Extension until May 29th
Due to the current restrictions, the Fritz Höger Award 2020 for Brick Architecture is being extended! Brick projects can now be submitted until May, the 29th. Thus we want to make sure, that architects from all over the world get the same opportunities for a nomination and can showcase their projects even under the ongoing difficult circumstances.

BERLIN. Let battle commence! The submission phase for the “2020 Fritz Höger Award for Brick Architecture” begins on 2 December 2019. The internationally renowned architecture prize is being presented for the fifth time by the Bauen mit Backstein Initiative, and is once again supported by the Association of German Architects (BDA).
