More international and more innovative than ever
The jury of the Erich Mendelsohn Award 2023 for Brick Architecture has decided: 76 architecture offices and projects from a total of 584 submissions were shortlisted by the jurors.
„the Submissions came from all over the world: from Europe, China, from South America and especially from Mexico, perhaps thanks to the previous winner. “
––– Ulrich Brinkmann, Bauwelt editor
In addition to the name, this year’s jury was characterized by a second novelty: For the first time, the panel had a strong international presence through the appointment of both 2020 Grand Prix winners. Fabrizio Barozzi (Barozzi Veiga) had joined from Barcelona and Andrés Solíz (Escobedo Soliz) from Mexico. Barozzi explicitly highlights the internationalization of the award as a success: “The different points of view due to the different geographic backgrounds of the jury members made the discussions really rich and thoughtful.”
Susanne Wartzeck (President Bund Deutscher Architektinnen und Architekten BDA) and Silvia Schellenberg-Thaut (Atelier ST) rounded out the jury alongside Brinkmann, Barozzi, and Solíz. The internationally staffed committee met in late June to discuss and evaluate projects in the four categories Residential Building/Apartment Complex, Office and Commercial Buildings, Public Buildings, Recreation and Sports, and Detached House/Semi-detached House as well as the special category Renovation. A total of 584 projects from 33 countries were submitted to the Erich Mendelsohn Award 2023 for Brick Architecture. 76 of them have made it to the shortlist. The names of the distinguished offices and their projects will be announced at the official award ceremony on September 8th in Berlin.
“Submissions came from all over the world: from Europe, China, from South America and especially from Mexico, perhaps thanks to the previous winner. The standard of innovation associated with the name Mendelsohn was constantly confirmed by these excellent projects”, Bauwelt editor and jury member Ulrich Brinkmann reflects on the jury meeting.
Given the fact that the award was dedicated to Mendelsohn for the first time, this strong global response resonated even further: “Many times today, I found myself thinking of Mendelsohn: of his life in Germany, in Palestine, in England, and in the US. He worked on different continents and in different cultural contexts.”
„THE DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW DUE TO THE DIFFERENT GEOGRAPHIC BACKGROUNDS OF THE JURY MEMBERS MADE THE DISCUSSIONS REALLY RICH AND THOUGHTFUL.”
