The submission phase for the Erich Mendelsohn Award 2026 for Brick Architecture has concluded with more than 500 entries from over 40 countries. The award continues to strengthen its international profile while maintaining its position as one of Germany’s leading architectural competitions.
Now in its seventh edition, the Erich Mendelsohn Award has once again attracted more than 500 submissions, reaffirming its standing among the world’s most respected architecture awards. Its international reach continues to grow: more than 170 projects were submitted from outside Germany. With entries from 41 countries across five continents, this year’s edition marks the broadest geographic participation since the award was first launched in 2008.
At the same time, the award—supported by the Association of German Architects (BDA) — remains firmly connected to its origins and its role in promoting architectural excellence in Germany. More than 350 submissions came from Germany, reflecting the enduring significance of brick in the country’s contemporary architecture. “This year’s figures point to a development that we find particularly encouraging,” Ernst Buchow, Chairman of the Initiative Building with Brick says. “ The award continues to grow in international reach and visibility, while at the same time remaining firmly rooted in Germany’s architectural tradition. That combination is what makes it so distinctive.”
To reflect this dual focus, a new category, Best in Germany, will be introduced in 2026. The award will recognize outstanding projects from Germany and further underline the Erich Mendelsohn Award’s commitment to celebrating international excellence while supporting architectural quality and innovation in its home. The winners will be selected in July by an independent jury of distinguished architects and industry experts. This year’s jury includes Max Wasserkampf (BDA Executive Board), Ulrich Brinkmann (Bauwelt), Josep Ricart (HARQUITECTES, winner of the 2023 Grand Prix), Jórunn Ragnarsdóttir (Lederer Ragnarsdóttir Architekten) and Lena Unger (Meier Unger Architekten).
