Tony Fretton Architects

Tony Fretton Architects was founded in 1982 and is now headed by directors Tony Fretton and Jim McKinney. We are an award winning practice that has established an international reputation for architecture of original and intelligent design that gives long-term satisfaction in use and cultural benefits to its surroundings. We are consistently successful in realising works of contemporary architecture in complex and historically significant locations within British and European regulatory environments, while delivering sustainable, low energy design.

Working at a European level our clients include the British Government, the Arts Council of England, European developers such as ING Real Estate, the Danish charitable foundation Realdania and significant private individuals. It is our aim to work at all scales, from modest buildings in our work for artists and community groups to large scale housing schemes and public buildings like the recently completed New British Embassy in Warsaw, or the Administrative Centre for Deinze in Belgium. The breadth of scale is reflected in a diversity of types of clients and end users of our projects. We enjoy forming and maintaining a creative dialogue with both private individuals, client committees and user groups. This ensures that the buildings we make have real resonance with the people that will use them.

The success of our work led to our selection to represent the United Kingdom at the 2008 Venice International Architecture Biennale and the recent short-listing of the Fuglsang Kunstmuseum for the Stirling Prize Building of the Year 2009. Tony Fretton is an active writer and lecturer, and became Professor at the Technical University in Delft in the Netherlands in 1999, a role that brings critical and scientific knowledge to the practice. Brikhauser recently published a comprehensive monograph on the work of the practice: Buildings and their Teritories.
