iredale pedersen hook architects

iredale pedersen hook architects is an internationally acclaimed design practice based in Perth and Melbourne, Australia.

The studio is renowned for its innovative approach across a very broad range of projects that are underpinned by critical thinking, stakeholder engagement and comprehensive project research.

Actively led by Founding Directors Adrian, Finn and Martyn, each with over 35 years of experience, the studio is driven by design excellence and is passionate about how architecture can make a positive impact on people’s lives and contribute to Australian communities, towns and cities.

Since formation in 1999, iredale pedersen hook architects has created an expansive and significant body of work throughout Australia. Working in urban, regional and remote locations, each of our projects embodies a unique design response to the landscape and to the context it occupies.

We are motivated by a belief that all people should have access to excellent affordable design in their homes, workplaces, schools, recreational and cultural precincts and have built a reputation for delivering projects with a focus of triple-bottom-line sustainable design - that is, environmental, social and economic sustainability.

Our architecture is drawn from a landscape that is dominated by the horizon. In Australia the desert and the ocean operate as constant counterpoints to the occupation of land by built objects and our work shares an understanding of landscape within the pragmatics of context.  We reject the idea of a ‘signature style’ to our architecture and seek to make a considered response to the specific and unique conditions that are presented by each project.

Each Director brings a particular approach to their work, however it proves to be a very complementary assemblage due to the collaborative skills of all the partners. Underpinning the collaboration is a mutual commitment to produce architecture that is responsive and compelling. After 27 years together the refined combination of the three partner’s talents supplemented by a strong, ambitious team provides iredale pedersen hook architects with a unique depth.

Their projects have won over 300 awards including multiple international awards; the World Architecture Festival (WAF) School, Timber, Health and Colour Awards, The Architecture of Necessity (Sweden) 2016 and 2019, two honourable mentions in the Architectural Review (UK) Awards for Emerging Architecture, an honourable mention in the Architectural Review (AR) Houses Award and the Italian PLAN Awards, numerous Architecture Masterprizes and Architizer awards and over one hundred Australian architecture awards at a State and National level including Australian Institute of Architects Awards, Landscape Institute Awards, Urban Design Awards, Sustainability Awards, Dulux Colour Awards, Brick, Timber and Colorbond Steel Awards. The work of the studio has been exhibited in Tokyo, Berlin, Seoul, Moscow, Toronto, Paris, New York, Jakarta and London including selection for the prestigious Venice Architecture Biennale in 2008, 2014, 2018 and 2021. iph is consistently published internationally in significant titles of both the architectural and popular press including A+U, The Architectural Review and Abitare.
